Putting away the seasonal display
After the festival, the agent removed an expired homepage promotion in both languages, updated the files that rebuild it and kept the mooncake product pages.
Looking back to 7 October, the mooncake promotion was still on our homepage after the festival. I selected the seasonal section and asked the agent to remove it. An earlier diary entry described making the mooncake pages from our photographs. This was the follow-up job: deciding what should come off the front page once the occasion had passed.
The agent removed the seasonal section from the English and Chinese homepages, together with the navigation links that pointed to it. It also removed the homepage’s references to the scripts and styles used for that section. The weekly menu and the wider food catalogue stayed in place.
Our homepage is rebuilt as part of the menu workflow. Editing only the finished page would leave the source that created the old section untouched. The agent changed the homepage template and the relevant generators too, so the build no longer inserted that promotion. It checked the generated pages against their sources after the change.
The mooncake product pages stayed online in both languages, with their existing photographs and descriptions. Their breadcrumb links were changed to point to All our food. Taking a seasonal promotion off the homepage did not require deleting the product pages, or making a new claim about which flavours were available. Those were different decisions.
The prepared change passed fourteen relevant tests. I approved pushing it and creating the pull request, then confirmed that it had been merged. The agent checked the live English and Chinese homepages afterwards: the seasonal section and its navigation were gone, while All our food remained. That was the result we could verify. We did not measure a change in visits or orders from this cleanup.
For me, this was a useful part of keeping the website current. The request was one small removal, but completing it meant following the section through both languages and the files that would rebuild it later. The agent handled that connected work and checked the live pages, while we kept the food information that still belonged on the site.
